History


1930 School of Science is established.

Six departments comprising 11 courses are formed: [Mathematics] Mathematics I (later Mathematics II and Geometry), Mathematics II (later Mathematics III, Mathematical Analysis and Function Equation), [Physics] Physics I (later Physics II and Solid-State Physics II), Physics II (later Physics IV and Mathematical Physics I), [Chemistry] Chemistry I (later Physical Chemistry), Chemistry II (later Analytic Chemistry), Chemistry III (later Biochemistry), [Geology and Mineralogy] Geology and Mineralogy I (later Lithology), Geology and Mineralogy II (later Stratigraphy), [Botany (later Biology)] Botany I (later Plant Physiology), [Zoology (later Biology)] Zoology I (later Zoology II and Zoomorphology).
1931 Akkeshi Marine Biological Station is established as an attached facility.

The following courses are reorganized and added: Physics I (later Solid-State Physics I) and Physics III (later Solid-State Physics III) in Department of Physics, Chemistry (later Chemistry IV and Organic Chemistry I) in Department of Chemistry, Geology and Mineralogy III (later Science of Ore Deposits) in Department of Geology and Mineralogy, Botany II (later Plant Taxonomy) in Department of Botany, Zoology I (later Zoosystematics) in Department of Zoology.
1932 The following courses are reorganized and added: Mathematics I (later Phase Analysis) in Department of Mathematics, Chemistry V (later Inorganic Chemistry) in Department of Chemistry, Geology and Mineralogy IV (later Mineralogy) in Department of Geology and Mineralogy, Botany III (later Morphologic Botany) in Department of Botany.
1933 Institute of Algological Research is established as an attached facility.

Course of Physics V (later Mathematical Physics II) is added to Department of Physics.
1941 Course of Mathematics IV (later Algebra) is added to Department of Mathematics.
1945 Course of Petroleum Geology (later Fuel Geology) is added to Department of Geology and Mineralogy.
1949 Departments of Botany and Zoology are combined as Department of Biology.
1952 Institute of Marine Algae Research (now Institute of Algological Research) is established as an attached facility.

Course of Synthetic Organic Chemistry (later Organic Chemistry II) is added to Department of Chemistry.

Marine Biological Station Aquarium is designated as a facility equivalent to a museum.
1953 Graduate School of Science is established.

Six departments are formed: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Geology and Mineralogy, Botany and Zoology (Doctoral and Master’s Courses).

Department of Geophysics is created in School of Science.

Course of Geophysics I (later Limnology) is formed in Department of Geophysics.
1954 Course of Geophysics II (later Seismology and Volcanology) is added to Department of Geophysics.
1955 Akkeshi Museum (now Marine Biological Station Museum) is designated a facility equivalent to a museum.

Course of Zoology III (later Animal Physiology) is added to Department of Biology.

Course of Geophysics III (later Meteorology) is added to Department of Geophysics.
1956 Course of Geophysics IV (later Applied Geophysics) is added to Department of Geophysics.
1957 Department of Geophysics is formed in Graduate School of Science.
1958 Course of Nuclear Theory is added to Department of Physics.
1959 Department of Polymer Science is established in School of Science.

Course of Polymer Science I (later Polymer Solid-State Physics) is formed.
1960 Courses of Polymer Science II (later Polymer Physical Chemistry) and Polymer Science III (later Polymer Solution Physics) are added to Department of Polymer Science.
1961 Course of Polymer Science IV (later Polymer Chemistry) is added to Department of Polymer Science.
1962 Course of Polymer Science V (later Biopolymer Science) is added to Department of Polymer Science.
1963 Department of Chemistry II is formed in School of Science.

Department of Polymer Science is created in Graduate School of Science.
1964 Courses of Quantum Chemistry, Structural Chemistry and Equilibrium Theory are added in Department of Chemistry II.
1965 Liquid Helium Center is established in School of Science.

Courses of Liquid-State Chemistry and Solid-State Chemistry are added to Department of Chemistry II.
1966 Urakawa Seismological Observatory is established as a facility attached to School of Science.

Courses of Bioorganic Chemistry and Radiochemistry (later Coordination Chemistry) is added to Department of Chemistry II.
1967 Division of Manifold Theory is added to Department of Mathematics.

Department of Chemistry II is formed in Graduate School of Science.
1968 Course of Function Theory is added to Department of Mathematics.
1969 Chromosome Research Unit is established in School of Science.

Course of Number Theory is added to Department of Mathematics.
1970 Course of Reaction Theory (later Organic Reaction Theory) is added to Department of Chemistry II.

Erimomisaki Geophysical Observatory (later Erimo Geophysical Observatory) is founded as a facility attached to School of Science.
1972 Sapporo Seismological Observatory is established as a facility attached to School of Science.
1976 Research Center for Earthquake Prediction is established as a facility attached to School of Science.

Department of Environmental Structure is established in Graduate School of Science.
1977 Usu Volcano Observatory is established as a facility attached to the School of Science.

Department of Environmental Structure is closed and shifted to Graduate School of Environmental Science.
1979 Laboratory for Ocean-Bottom Seismology is established as a facility attached to School of Science.
1980 Course of Marine Physics is added to Department of Geophysics.

School of Science celebrates 50th anniversary.
1981 Resolution Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Laboratory is established in School of Science.

Course of Theoretical Physics is added to Department of Physics.
1982 Course of Experimental Physics is added to Department of Physics.
1983 Institute of Algological Research celebrates 50th anniversary.
1985 Laboratory for Energy Dispersive and Wave Length Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy is established in School of Science.
1986 Course of Environmental Chemistry is added to Department of Chemistry.
1987 Course of Equilibrium Theory in Department of Chemistry II is renamed Genetic Biochemistry.

Course of Applied Mathematics is added to Department of Mathematics.
1988 School of Science begins to manage Oshoro Marine Biological Station, an inter-university research facility.
1989 Squid Magnetometer and Susceptometer Laboratory is established in School of Science.
1991 Course of Cell Biology is added to Department of Biology.
1992 Course of Historical Geology is added to Department of Geology and Mineralogy.

Course of Computational Mathematics is added to Department of Mathematics.
1993 Departments of Botany, Zoology and Polymer Science in Graduate School are reorganized into Department of Biological Sciences consisting of six courses: Systematics and Evolution, Cell Function and Structure, Animal Behavior and Intelligence, Molecular and Cellular Interactions, Structural Bio-Macromolecular Sciences, and Bio-Macromolecular Chemistry, and two cooperative divisions: Marine Biology and Marine Phycological Science.

Departments of Biology and Polymer Science are reorganized into Department of Biological Sciences comprising two divisions, Biology and Macromolecular Functions.

Graduate School of Environmental Earth Science is established, and the following are moved: Course of Environmental Chemistry (Department of Chemistry), parts of Course of Historical Geology (Department of Geology & Mineralogy), Department of Biology, and Department of Polymer Science

Division of Chemistry and Earth and Planetary Materials Science is established.

Course of Earth System Material Circulation is added to Department of Geophysics.
1994 Department of Physics in Graduate School is reorganized to consist of four courses: Quantum Physics, Electronic Condensed-Matter Physics, Condensed-Matter Physics and Nonlinear Physics, and two cooperative courses: Quantum Condensed Matter Physics (Research Institute for Electronic Science) and Physics of Phase Transition (Research Institute for Electronic Science)

Departments of Geology and Mineralogy & Geophysics in Graduate School are reorganized into Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences comprising four courses: Earth and Planetary Materials Science, Earth and Planetary Evolution, Earth and Planetary Fluid Dynamics, and Earth and Planetary Physics, and the cooperative course Catastrophic Geodynamics (Institute of Seismology and Volcanology).

Department of Physics is reorganized to become Division of Physics.

Departments of Geology and Mineralogy & Geophysics are reorganized into Department of Earth Sciences including two divisions: Earth and Planetary Materials Science and newly-established Geophysics.
1995 Department of Mathematics in the Graduate School is reorganized to consist of three courses: Algebraic Studies, Geometric Studies and Analytic Studies, and the cooperative division of Nonlinear Studies and Computation (Research Institute for Electronic Science).

Departments of Chemistry and Chemistry II are reorganized as Department of Chemistry comprising five divisions: Molecular Structure Chemistry, Basic Materials Chemistry, Synthetic Molecular Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Molecular Transformation Chemistry and Reaction Dynamics, and two cooperative divisions, Supramolecular Chemistry (Research Institute for Electronic Science) and Cellular Function and Regulation (Institute of Immunological Science).

After all of five departments are reorganized, Graduate School of Science becomes a "graduate research school" placing greater emphasis on graduate education and research activities.

Department of Mathematics is reorganized.

Division of Mathematics is established.

Departments of Chemistry and Chemistry II are reorganized as Department of Chemistry (Division of Chemistry established in 1993).
1996 Marine Biological Station Aquarium is de-designated as a facility equivalent to a museum.
1998 Urakawa Seismological Observatory, Erimo Geophysical Observatory, Sapporo Seismological Observatory, Research Center for Earthquake Prediction, Usu Volcano Observatory and Laboratory for Ocean Bottom Seismology, all attached to School of Science, are merged into Institute of Seismology and Volcanology attached to Graduate School of Science.
2001 Field Science Center for Northern Biosphere is established, and Akkeshi Marine Biological Station, Institute of Algological Research and Oshoro Marine Biological Station are joined.

Chromosome Research Unit is integrated as improved Center for Advanced Science and Technology.

A cooperative course in catalytic science (Catalysis Research Center) is created in Department of Chemistry, Graduate School.
2002 A cosmic radio telescope (11m aperture) is installed in Graduate School of Science.
2003 Division of Basic Industrial Biological Science (a collaborative division) is established in Department of Biological Science, Graduate School.

Endowed Divisions of Glyco-Fine Chemistry, Computational Molecular Biological Science and Molecular Bionomy-Shionogi are established in Department of Biological Science, Graducate School.
2005 Faculty of Environmental Earth Science is established, and cooperative courses in Graduate School of Science, and Marine Biology and Algology in Department of Biological Sciences, are transferred to this faculty.

Cooperative Division of Molecular Cytogenetics (Center for Advanced Science and Technology) is established in Department of Biological Sciences, Graduate School.

School of Science celebrates 75th anniversary..
2006 Graduate School of Science is reorganized into “Graduate School of Science” and “Faculty of Science”.

Faculty of Science consists of five Departments: Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Natural History Sciences and Biological Sciences.

Graduate School of Science includes six departments: Mathematics, Chemistry, Quantum and Condensed-Matter Physics, Cosmosciences, Natural History Sciences, and Biological Sciences. All cooperative divisions are closed with the reorganization, making instructors from other schools/institutes academic members of the key divisions.

Divisions of Earth and Planetary Materials Science and Geophysics are combined as Division of Earth Science.

Institute of Seismology and Volcanology belongs to Faculty of Science. Collaborative Division of Basic Industrial Biological Science (National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology) in Department of Biological Sciences of former Graduate School changes to a collaborative field in Department of Biological Sciences, Graduate School.

Endowed divisions of Glyco-Fine Chemistry, Computational Molecular Biological Science and Molecular Bionomy (Shionogi) in Department of Biological Science of former Graduate School are moved to newly-established Faculty of Advanced Life Science.
2007 Nuclear Reaction Data Centre is established in Faculty of Science.

Collaborative Field of Nuclear Data (Japan Atomic Energy Agency) is established in Department of Cosmosciences, Graduate School of Science.

Network Center for Molecular and System Life Sciences is established in Faculty of Science.

Observation and Data Centre for Cosmosciences is established in Faculty of Science.
2008 Collaborative field of Advanced Functional Material Chemistry (National Institute for Materials Science) is established in Department of Chemistry, Graduate School of Science.
2009 Collaborative field of Spacecraft Observation (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) is established in Department of Cosmosciences, Graduate School of Science.
2010 Department of Chemistry in Graduate School moves to newly-established Graduate School of Chemical Sciences and Engineering.

Department of Biological Sciences in Graduate School moves to Graduate School of Life Science.

Department of Quantum and Condensed-Matter Physics in Graduate School is renamed Condensed Matter Physics.
2011 Department of Earth Sciences is renamed Earth and Planetary Sciences.

Nuclear Reaction Data Center is established in Faculty of Science.

Application for Graduate School
