Fields of Speciality
Evolutionary and Developmental Biology in Plants
Subject of Research
Understanding for molecular mechanisms of plant development and environmental responses in terms of evolution and genomic or cellular level.

Background

Born in Kashihara, Nara, on October 3rd, 1964,
Went to Masuga Elementary School, Masuga Kita Elementary School (1 home run total in boys baseball),
Taisei Junior High School (Track and Field),
Tennoji High School attached to Osaka Kyoiku University (Wandervogel Club FWV),
Went to preparatory school,
Enrolled in Waseda University, School of Education, Department of Science, Biology Major, Graduated (Mountain Climbing Club)
I advanced to the masters program of the University of Tokyo, Scientific Research Department, for a major in physical and chemical science, and received my Ph.D. in this field in 1993 from Professor K. Shono. I was inspired by the amazing regenerative abilities of plants after inducing genetic tumors in minced tobacco shoots.

Research and Work History

1993: Performed functional analysis of human herpes cancer gene at the National Institute of Health, Infectious Diseases, Virus Department 1, as post-doctoral researcher (Lab Chief,  Kazuo Yanagi).
1994: Performed functional analysis of stress-dependent polycistronic genes in tomatoes at Purdue University, as post-doctoral researcher (Prof. L. Csonka, R. Bressan and P. Hasegawa).
1998: Performed research on the development and morphogenesis of plants at the Graduate School of Science / Faculty of Science, Kyoto University and at the Graduate School of Science, Nagoya University as post-doctoral researcher (Prof. Y. Machida).
2000: Took a post as an assistant at the Hasebe Laboratory, at the National Institute for Basic Biology, Evolutionary Biology Research Division (Division of Speciation Mechanisms II), and performed research focused on plants, development, and evolution.
2005: Associate professor, and 2016- Current position.
